We carry a variety of mineral and organic inputs for our region's soils, which can be acidic, low in P, high in Mg,,  low in Calcium and usually depleted of minerals. We suggest a soil test to help you figure out what your soil needs.  Click here to view an information sheet that tells the ways nutrients and minerals effect plants.

Soil Test Interpretation and Organic Recommendations offered by Dr. Mark Schonbeck
Are you just getting started with organic farming or gardening, are you opening a new field for production, or do you have a problem field for which you want information on how best to manage it? Have you received a soil test report for which you would like help interpreting it from an organic or sustainable viewpoint?  Do you need recommendations for organic amendments and natural soil-improvement practices?
Dr. Mark Schonbeck has experience reading and interpreting soil tests to determine what amendments are actually needed. Mark can make organic/sustainable soil test recommendations.
For details on how to take soil samples and who Mark recommends for a soil test, please contact Mark directly at 540-745-4130 or email him at mark@abundantdawn.org. His fee is $25 per hour, one test usually takes two hours, additional tests runs from 1/2 hour to one hour each. Farm visits are subject to a travel expense charge.
After Mark has interpreted your soil test please call Seven Springs to see how I can help in finding you the right products for your projects.
How to take a soil test
Be sure to get a good soil sample. Take cores from the surface to a depth of 6 inches (if you don't have a soil core sampler, cut a vertical slice into the soil with a spade or shovel, then take a uniform slice along the vertical cut from the surface to 6 inches). Take 12-20 cores from points scattered evenly through the field or garden you are sampling. Take separate samples for any portions of the field or farm that have distinctly different soil types or very different management histories. Mix the cores thoroughly in a clean plastic bucket or stoneware crock, place a pint of soil in a sample bag provided by the testing lab, or in a zipper-seal plastic bag. Remember not to handle your soil sample with your bare hands, use rubber gloves.
Where to send your soil test
Send the sample to a reputable soil testing lab - such as A&L Eastern Agricultural Laboratories in Richmond, Virginia Tech, or other lab of your choice.  In addition to soil pH, organic matter and major nutrients (N, P, K, Mg, Ca) it can be helpful to test for essential micro nutrients, especially Boron (B) which is often deficient in Virginia soils. When you receive the test report we will need the following information. A brief outline of the history of the field(s) or garden(s) sampled, your production plans and objectives, any observations on the condition of the soil itself or of the vegetation (crops, weeds, native plants) growing in it, and any specific questions.  Be sure to state whether your farm is USDA certified organic.

From past reports Mark has helped many farmers save time and money by providing them with insightful information so they can choose the proper soil building techniques for their operation. His service is well worth the cost. We highly recommend getting a soil test done every few years.

What is in Harmony & Symphony fertilizer?
The Harmony & Symphony 5-4-3 fertilizer that we sell (Page 4) comes from a family owned and operated poultry farm in NY. The Symphony 5-4-3 is from USDA Organic Layers. Even though the Harmony fertilizer is not produced from the manure of organic chickens, we consider it a far better product than most of the poultry based products sold as fertilizer on the market today.  Harmony birds are layers, unlike other poultry manure based fertilizers, which are usually from broilers. Broilers are often fed feeds with arsenic in them, a common practice for large-scale mono-production of meat birds.
Another fact about our NY. based poultry farm is that they raise organic layers for organic egg production and they produce a lot of their own organic grains for that operation. In general, we feel much better about purchasing, selling and using a product produced by farmers that have a clear understanding about raising crops and animals in an ecological and humane way.

We have used the following products for over 27 years. We find them to be important elements in organic production. Vermiculite; Please Note for small quantity orders, it cost more to ship one bag of vermiculite or perlite than what the product itself cost. This is due to the large size box it is shipped in.
Confused about coarse vermiculite? READ ON!
That is because there are several grades of vermiculite out there and they are classified in different ways depending on the origin of the ORE. USA mined ore that makes vermiculite is the product that produces the Horticultural grade vermiculite used in the nursery and horticulture business. You might find this product labeled as coarse vermiculite but actually it is a rather fine product and not the proper thing you need for Square Foot Gardening. The difference is that African and Chinese Ore is the product that makes a larger particle when it is heated and expanded. This is the product that is called A-3 Vermiculite. Some manufacturers call it Medium and some call it Coarse but it is the product you want for Square Foot Gardening. It is a larger particle than horticultural grade vermiculite. I carry this A-3 coarse product only. This product does work in potting mixes or seed starting mixes also but it does have a lot of the larger particles in it so some people prefer to use horticultural grade vermiculite in there seed starting mixes. That is the product I do not sell. Just be aware that many garden centers and stores will carry coarse vermiculite, but it is probably the Horticultural grade product you do not want. Hope this helps!

Vermiculite (Coarse) - This lightweight mineral holds and releases air and water as plants require. Turns caked soil into a friable medium. Gives body to sandy soils. For use in potting mixes. This is the vermiculite that everyone is using for their Square Foot Gardening projects.
Please Note: This product is asbestos free. We also sell this product as an insulation for folks building brick ovens, or for use in straw bale stucco construction. GemStar LC - A Liquid Concentrate Biological Insecticide For Control of Corn earworm (Cotton bollworm, Tomato fruitworm), and Tobacco budworm. Active Ingredient: Polyhedral occlusion bodies (OBs) of the nuclear polyhedrosis virus of Helicoverpa zea (corn earworm)  Frequent application at low rates is usually more effective than infrequent application at high rates. Lower rates may be used during vegetative stages of crop growth or when tank mixed with other insecticides also effective against Heliothis or Helicoverpa (see more information on tank mixing below). When flowers, fruit, or other harvested structures are present, use higher rates and/or increased frequency of sprays, or tank mix with an insecticide having contact knockdown activity. Sweet corn: Application should be made from early vegetative growth stage to tasseling and before emergence of silks. Retreatment may be required at 2 - 3 day intervals depending on egg counts and crop growth rate due to short residual activity of the virus. Rate of Application; 4 - 10 fl oz per acre. Typical spray volumes are 20 - 100 gallons of water per acre for ground application and 5 - 20 gallons per acre for conventional aerial application. PyGanic 1.4 % & 5.0 % Concentrate - One of the hottest selling broad spectrum insect control that has a fast result knockdown and kill on plant pest. May be used on all growing plants indoors and outdoors. Very effective on hundreds of insects. Zero pre-harvest interval. Can be mixed with other active ingredients. Low odor, non corrosive pyrethrin liquid. Application rate for 1.4% is 1 - 2 oz per gallon of water. 5% rate is 1/4 to 1/2 oz per gallon water.
Mixing information: This is what they say in general:
Q. Can PyGanic be tank-mixed with other products?
A. Yes, PyGanic is frequently used in combination with other crop protection products such as Bacillus Thuriengensis, Azadiractin, Spinosad, Neem Oil, and a host of other additives, fungicides, nutrients, surfactants and penetrants. PyGanic provides benefits such as quick knockdown and kill of insects, broader spectrum of control, and resistance management benefits to these types of products.

Q. Will the addition of a surfactant, spreader or wetting agent to a PyGanic spray solution increase the level of insect control I get?
A. We are aware of numerous studies that demonstrate tank-mixing certain types of these products with PyGanic will slightly increase the level of insect control. We have not seen enough information to recommend specific brands. Your best source of this type of information may be the manufacturer of the additive. As with any penetrant, wetting agent and surfactant, we recommend small scale testing be conducted in order to ensure these products will not injure your crops. Always be sure the spray solution is within the pH range of 5.5 to 7.0.

Application use for Fogging: for 5% pyganic it is listed on the label at the end of the label for use on barns, dairy houses, etc for this kind of use.
Use a ULV, ultra low volume fogger at the rate of 2.5 fl oz per gallon of water then take that solution and apply at the rate of 2 oz. per 1000 cu ft of space. Be sure to close up all doors and windows beforehand. Keep closed for 15 minutes. Before re-entry you should turn over the air in the room at  least 3 times before entering workspace.

HERBICIDES NATURAL

Burnout ll Concentrate - an all natural grass and weed killer, is made from vinegar (acetic acid), clove oil, lemon, and other natural plant oils. This proven combination of ingredients makes for one of the best lawn weed killers available. Burnout has more killing power than plain vinegar weed killers. Burnout is a non-toxic and pet safe weed killer. It is a biodegradable product and does not bioaccumulate. Vinegar readily degrades in water. Burnout doesn't affect soil health, within 48 hours the pH of the soil will return to its original level. If you are using Burnout on young, small weeds (3-5 leaf) we recommend mixing 3:1 with water. So in this case 1 gallon of Burnout concentrate will make 4 gallons of ready to use spray. If you're weeds are older and more entrenched, mix 2:1 with water, so 2.5 gallons of Burnout concentrate will make 7.5 gallons of ready to use weed killer. 1 gal. of ready to use spray will cover approx 600 sq. ft. 1 gallon and 2.5 gallon size is Concentrate. Sterling Rescue Stink Bug Trap Reusable - One trap covers a 30 ft radius. Catches Adult Stink Bugs. Trap is ready to go right out of the box. You can reuse the trap season after season. No harmful chemical poisons - the insects dehydrate and die. Odor-free pheromone attractant included with each trap that lasts for 2 weeks. It is recommended that you purchase the Replacement Lure (listed below) that lasts for up to 7 weeks.  New research is being done everyday to help consumers figure out the best ways to use these traps. A recent phone call with rescue suggested that consumers hang these traps at 3-4 ft from the ground on a post either in or near foliage with stink bugs. Also if you have had extremely high temperatures in your location then it is possible that the pheromone lure may have lost its strength and may need to be replaced. If your trap is new and got over heated and you are not having good results with the trap then you can call the company and they will assist you in getting your trap to work. They may also replace the lure if it was damaged by the heat.

Helps prevent damage to gardens and agricultural areas. Helps stop them before they enter the home. This trap can also be used in the home in the fall and winter when it is not needed outdoors. We will be offering the Rescue Stink Bug Light later this year after it comes out. Basically it is a 3 watt electric light that plugs into the wall and is put on the top of the stink bug trap. This will help attract them to the trap were they will dehydrate and die.

Commonly asked questions;

Can the outdoor stink bug trap be used indoors? The outdoor trap can be moved indoors with the light as an attractant.
Is there any smell that comes from the traps when used indoors?  When using indoors, the Attractants are removed and the Light Attachment is the lure.
What is the shelf life of an unopened extra lure?  Unlimited.
Were are the best places to put these traps in the outdoor location? Use the RESCUE!® Stink Bug Trap outdoors, preferably in foliage 10-30 feet from your house. Hang from a tree or fence, or secured to a stake or pole.  In late summer or early fall after most plants are harvested or cut back, hang the trap within ten feet of your house to intercept stink bugs before they enter homes to overwinter. To protect all sides of a house from migrating stink bugs, multiple traps may need to be used.
Should the trap be put in the shade?  For the bugs it makes no difference, but the Attractant may evaporate too quickly in full day sun.
Does the light help to attract the stink bugs on the indoor lighted trap?  Place the RESCUE!® Stink Bug Trap with the light attachment in a darkened room of the house where there is no competing light source at night. For best results, place it where you have seen stink bug activity and where the trap is in their line of sight.

SurroundTM WP Crop Protectant - Made from Kaolin clay, this white coating for plant surfaces suppresses pests and reduces harmful solar effects.  A semi continuous porous "particle film" barrier that protects your fruits, vegetables and foliage but doesn't block light. Use on: Tree Fruit; protects against insects like psylla and plum curculio and reduces heat stress and sunburn; Vegetable and Field Crops: suppresses insects such as flea beetles, Japanese beetles, lace bugs, leafhoppers, thrips and more. Tank mixes with most other pest control products except dormant oil. Mixes well with lime-sulfur and wettable sulfur used for disease control. Surround can be applied during bloom on crops. It is best to apply when bees are not actively foraging. You can increase wetting ability if you mix in Safer soap with the Surround. This is especially helpful on shiny and waxy foliage. Trials at 7 Springs show flea and cucumber beetle suppression on many crops. Thorough coverage of fruit and foliage before infestation gives best results. Using our backpack sprayers, we find it easy to mix, apply and clean up. We can fit two bags to a box which helps save on shipping. Rate: use 2 cups/gal. or 50 lbs./100 gallons of water.  Note: We have one of the best retail prices for this product in the country, call or email today for a shipping price. DEER FENCING & 10 ft. T-Posts & Bird Netting

Deer Fencing - Tenax Cintoflex Polyethylene fence. Grid size is 1 3/4" x 1 3/4". Produced by a patented stretching and extruding process. UV stabilized, extremely strong yet light-weight, easy to install, not affected by extreme temperatures, will not rot or discolor, does not deform, maintenance free- no sanding or painting, and is recyclable. Note: I have heard reports about cheaper types of fencing that do not hold up long term and because they are made from cheap materials they often sag and a small grid size catches wildlife such as snakes and birds. We have never had any problems with DeerBusters fencing catching any wildlife. It does a great job of keeping them out of the garden. We can also get you any supplies from DeerBusters at a lower prioce than what they sell them for. Just email or give a call and we will get you those prices.

CLOVER MEDIUM RED OG - Red clover is a short-lived (2-5 years) tap-rooted perennial legume that fixes 100-150 lb Nitrogen per year, mobilizes soil phosphorus and penetrates hardpan.  Plant red clover 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in early spring or late summer at 10-15 lb/ac (4-6 oz/1,000 sq ft), with oats at 40-50 lb/ac (1 lb/1,000 sq ft) and (optionally) ryegrass, orchardgrass or timothy at half the normal recommended rate.  Growing red clover + grass for one to three years restores soil that has become "tired" from intensive cultivation, building organic matter, tilth and fertility while suppressing weeds.  Clover can also be overseeded into corn, vegetables or row crops when the latter are at mid-growth. Cowpeas, Iron & Clay (Vigna unguiculata) - 65 - 85 days. Best used for soil improver, large vines grow and climb everywhere, seeds are colorful and edible. Bush type plant produces heavy yields, unlike other cowpea varieties, iron and clays continue to grow and produce forage after the seed has dropped. Can be planted in fields to attract deer and game birds. Deer love cowpea. Quail & other game birds relish the seed if the plant is allowed to seed. Drought Resistant.
Cowpea culture:  Culture is very similar to beans. Plant when the soil is warm. Many view these as a Southern crop but will also do fine further north. They are delicious fresh-shelled and cooked, or you may dry them before shelling and use them as dry beans. They make a rich broth and are an excellent food product. Give some a try this year. Lupin cv. AU Alpha - Autumn-seeded legume. This sweet white lupin is a winter-annual like crimson clover, which forms a rosette in the fall and blooms in the spring. Optimum seeding time is 4 weeks prior to the average date of the first 28oF freeze. A cool-season crop that will stop setting seed when the average daily highs exceed 85oF for an extended period. Tolerates acid soils down to pH 5 and is able to scavenge P from it because of secretion from specialized roots that modify the rhizosphere. Seeding depth 1/4 - 1/2 inch. Seeding rate 60 lbs/acre. For cover crop purposes it is advantageous to include 15-20 lbs/acre of a small grain (wheat, oat, rye) to the lupin seed. Untreated Seed.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON LUPIN BY AN EXPERT:
How fast does the lupin seed germinate? Emergence within 7 days
How well do they germinate in dryer situations? Like any plants lupins need water but as long as you don't plant them in dust they should be ok. Seeding depth should be about 1/2 inch.
Will it cover the ground by fall if seeded at the recommended rate? see attached pdf for calculations. The later you plant the smaller the  diameter before onset of winter and hence the higher the seeding rate will have to be.
Why do you recommend growing a grain with it? Because it evens out the biomass yield from year to year. Some years are small grain years and others favor lupins. That 80:20 ratio is critical. Most producers are tempted to add more small grain according  to the "more must be better" approach. All I can say is resist that temptation because grasses are more competitive in winter than any legume in the rosette stage.
How early will it bloom in the spring for someone in Zone 7? Flowering should begin around 600 GDD C after seeding with a base temp of 4 degree C. For indeterminate cultivars such as AU Alpha, flowering ceases when the 7-day avg high temp exceeds 85 F. In Alabama we only get mainstem bloom and primary branch bloom. In Zone 7 you also may get pod set on secondary branches.
How much nitrogen per acre will it fix? A minimum of 75 lbs N/acre I would say. A better way to judge the contribution would be to cut a small area in the spring before it is terminated, determine dry matter biomass yield. A good guestimate of N- content would be 2%. Thus a 2 ton/acre biomass yield would be equivalent to 80 lbsN/acre.
