Answer: From the FDA website: “The VFD final rule outlines the process for authorizing use of VFD drugs (animal drugs intended for use in or on animal feed that require the supervision of a licensed veterinarian) and provides veterinarians in all states with a framework for authorizing the use of medically important antimicrobials in feed when needed for specific animal health purposes.”
Kelp has never required the supervision of a veterinarian for feeding, is not a drug and is not be by this rule. It is always a good idea to keep your vet informed of all supplements fed to your animals and care should be taken feeding it to iodine sensitive animals like horses or cats, sticking to recommended doses and making sure the kelp is their only iodine source. Sincerely, Thorvin
